19-year-old Lorenzo Musetti continues to impress the world tennis audience with his appearances in Acapulco and at the same time write history, continuing a fabulous week in the tournament in Mexico.
After 2 hours and 8 minutes of a very difficult match, Musetti managed to beat Dimitrov 6-4, 7-6 (3) and advance to the first semifinal of the ATP 500 tournament in his career.
It was his 3rd consecutive big win for this week, as he was preceded by his successes against Diego Schwartzman and Frances Tiafoe, while he reached a total of 6 consecutive victories in the tournament, as he had started from the qualifiers.
This was also Musetti’s 5th victory, in 6 matches in which he has faced a tennis player from the Top 50 so far in his career.
Apart from a difficult challenge physically, since the game exceeded 2 hours in duration and was the 6th consecutive in the last 6 days for the Italian, it was also a great mental challenge today for Musetti.
In the 1st set he lost a 4-1 lead, tied at 4-4, but remained cool and made another break in the 10th game, to win it 6-4. He then suffered a break and was left behind with a break in the 2-3 of the 2nd set, but he responded immediately and equalized to 3-3.
Then he had a triple match point and 4 chances in total to finish the match in the 10th game (4-5, 0-40), but Dimitrov saved it all and kept his serve for 5-5. In the 12th game, the 19-year-old had another match point, with Dimitrov erasing it as well, tying it at 6-6.
And despite the 5 missed opportunities, Musetti was not discouraged, he remained cool and strong spiritually, to play better in the tie-break, where he led 6-2. In the 7th match point, the Italian finally managed to complete his triumph, who for the third consecutive game celebrated by falling to the ground.
In the semifinals of Abierto Mexicano o Musetti, who with his victory today secured his first entry in the Top 100, will face Stefanos Tsitsipas, who earlier beat Felix Auger-Aliassime 7-5, 4-6, 6- 3.
In the other semifinal of Acapulco, the two Germans, Alexander Zverev and Dominik Koepfer, will face each other. Zverev qualified unopposed as Casper Ruud withdrew from the tournament before the quarterfinals, while Koepfer beat Cameron Norrie 7-5, 6-4.
