Maria Sakkari’s statements about her emphatic victory today, her progress so far in Miami and her next match against Jessica Pegula.

Maria faced Liudmila Samsonova for the first time, after 4 very good matches for the Russian in the tournament (she started in the qualifying round). Despite knowing very little about her, she managed to dominate the match and won it in just 67 minutes, with an emphatic 6-0, 6-1.

“I was a little worried that I had never seen her play with care before. But I always give myself time, 1-2 games, to see how she serves, what she does on court, how she hits the ball. It was a big help that I broke in the first game, but it’s always the unknown that’s harder,” the top Greek tennis player told tennisnews news.

“I’m on the right track, I’m more selective with what I do on court and I’m not overdoing it. That was enough for the first rounds, it definitely won’t be enough for the next ones,” she added.

In the next round, for a quarterfinal berth now, Maria will face Jessica Pegula for a quarterfinal berth. The 27-year-old American is enjoying the best period of her career and reached the quarter-finals of the Australian Open in February, but Maria has been playing some very good tennis since the start of the year.

“This year she’s playing maybe her best tennis, but I don’t want to forget that I’m playing very well too. I believe in my potential and it’s hot here, which I think suits me more than any other player. There are a lot of positives from my side.”

Despite not being in any real danger at any point in the match, Maria showed the same passion in all games today, in all points and contested and even in the only game she lost, she had a double break point and led the Russian to 5 draws before losing it!

“I’m a little bit relieved (not getting the double bagel), but that’s okay, I’ll get the breadstick (laughs),” Maria said in Greek to another question asked at the press conference.

“I generally try new things and they work out well. It doesn’t seem to suit me to be calm on the court, I have a temperament and a character like that.”
