After a thriller, Jessica Pegula knocked out Karolina Pliskova in Miami and will be Maria Sakkari’s next opponent.
Jessica Pegula took the win over Karolina Pliskova 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 in a very controversial match with twists and turns and changes of emotions.
The 27-year-old American, who has been playing her best tennis in recent months, culminating in her quarter-final appearance at the Australian Open, had a chance to end the match early as she completely dominated the court and won 10 of the first 12 games to take a 6-1, 4-1 lead.
Pliskova, however, reacted before it was too late and managed to take the next five games to overturn the second set from 1-4 to 6-4 and send the match into a third set.
There, the Czech had a chance to pull off the big upset as she broke first to take a 4-2 lead. But Pegula had the final say and with a new fightback and 4 games won in a row, she finally managed to take the deciding set 6-4 and complete her very big win.
It was Pegula’s 4th Top 10 victory in her career, 3rd consecutive against Pliskova, who she had beaten in Doha and Dubai in the previous weeks! And her other Top 10 win was this year, against Elina Svitolina at the Australian Open.
Tomorrow, Sakkari and Pegula will clash for a place in the quarter-finals of the Miami Open. It will be the second meeting between the two players, who also faced each other in Eastbourne in the summer of 2019, with Sakkari then taking a relatively easy 6-1, 6-2 victory.
